Vanishing tribes vs vanishing whales

Article Abstract:

The nine-year moratorium on commercial whaling established by the International Whaling Commission does not apply to tribal groups such as the Inuit people of Greenland, as whaling is regarded as part of their ancient tribal culture. However, killing by these groups accounts for hundreds of whale deaths every year, and this issue is now to be discussed by the International Whaling Commission. The problem has become particularly sensitive since the Makah American Indian tribe sought permission to return to whaling.

Country life to be rescued by town cramming

Article Abstract:

It is estimated that there will be a need for a 23% increase in the number of households in the UK in the period 1991-2016. The government is hoping to reduce the impact of this increase by ensuring that more than half of all new homes are built within existing cities, towns and villages. However, some planners are expressing concern about this approach, believing that fitting new homes into urban areas could create settlements which eventually become slums.

Delay and dishonesty in defence of the whales

Article Abstract:

Japan, Iceland and Norway wish to end the International Whaling Commission's moratorium on commercial whaling but the annual meeting in Jul 92 in Glasgow refused. Meat from minkes, the most abundant great whales and the smallest, is in demand and they would not be threatened with extinction. The scientific committee introduced the catch-limit algorithm as part of the Revised Management Procedure.
