Vendor rises from the depths to sell Russia's 'Big Issue.' (UK government gives aid for development of street newspaper in Russia)

Article Abstract:

There are now 56 registered homeless people in St Petersburg, Russia, selling copies of Na Dnye, a street newspaper being developed with the help of UK government aid. The publication, which is run by a charity for the homeless, operates along the same lines as the Big Issue street newspaper in the UK. Homeless people buy copies of the newspaper for a nominal sum, then sell them at a much higher price, retaining the difference. There are many poor people in St Petersburg, and there is very strong competition among them to make money.

Russia's new regency

Article Abstract:

Tatyana Dyachenko, the younger daughter of Russian president Boris Yeltsin, is gaining an increasingly powerful position in Russian politics, even though Russians are generally not in favour of women politicians. She is working with Anatoly Chubais, Yeltin's chief of staff, and a group of powerful businessmen. This partnership has already been able to appoint two leading business supporters to top government jobs and control access to Boris Yeltsin himself.
