Victim, killer, cause celebre and heroine

Article Abstract:

Emma Humphreys, who was convicted in Dec 1985 of the murder of her abusive partner Trevor Armitage, has died at the age of only 30. In 1995, she succeeded in having her conviction reduced to manslaughter on the grounds of long-term provocation. After her release, she received no help from social services, and her only source of support was the pressure group Justice for Women. She found it very hard to adapt to life outside prison, but began to campaign on behalf of other women in similar circumstances. Her memory will live on after her, as she had the courage to challenge the law.

Mountain heroine feared dead

Article Abstract:

Mountaineer Alison Hargreaves and up to six others are believed to have died in an avalanche just below the summit of K2 in Pakistan's Karakoram range. The party had reached the summit, and were descending when the accident took place. A search has been launched, but hostile conditions will make it hard for reliable facts to be established quickly.

Hope for missing climber runs out

Article Abstract:

It is now thought most unlikely that British mountaineer Alison Hargreaves survived an avalanche on K2. Weather conditions have been very poor, and climbers nearby have reported seeing a dead body with clothing resembling hers. Her husband has stated that he is not sad if she has died, as she achieved her aim of reaching the summit.
