Videotape epic reels out intimations of mortality for 'excellent' Comrade Deng

Article Abstract:

There will inevitably be renewed speculation about the health of 92-year-old Chinese leader Deng Xiaoping following the running of a television series about his life in which no recent footage of him was shown. The official line is that he is in good health for a man of his age, but the most recent photograph shown of him in the series was taken in 1994. The series was designed to emphasise the Chinese Communist Party's claim to legitimacy.

Deng's gangsters

Article Abstract:

The new film by Zhang Yimou, entitled 'Shanghai Triad,' portrays gangster activity in pre-war Shanghai. Gangsters are still extremely influential in China, even though their world is no longer as glamorous as that portrayed in the film. Many gangs obtain large sums in protection money, and do not hesistate to murder, gamble and smuggle drugs. Moves towards a more open economy have given gangsters even more opportunities for making money.
