Virgin turns cheeky in capital war

Article Abstract:

Radio stations operating in London, England, have traditionally not criticised each other. However, this unwritten agreement is now being broken by Virgin 105.8FM, which is openly attacking Capital, its closest competitor. It has even gone as far as attempting by a concealed route to have its advertising placed on Capital, but was unsuccessful. It emphasises that its approach to Capital should be seen in the light-hearted vein in which it is intended.

First cyborg turns forty

Article Abstract:

Singer Michael Jackson, who celebrates his 40th birthday on Aug 29, 1998, has fallen from favour in the 1990s. Many ordinary Americans have forgotten the fact that he was an extraordinary entertainer. He attracted controversy by appearing to move away from his black American roots, and also began to lose touch with his talent. He seems to have been worshipped to the point of near-death, and the heights of fame have also proved his undoing.

Attention turns to profits from the Continent

Article Abstract:

Many UK and US venture capitalists have gone into Europe including the new markets of Portugal, Greece and Hungary, concentrating on later stage finance: buy-outs, buy-ins and development capital. There are opportunities to buy into privately owned companies needing to restructure to compete over national boundaries. The most difficult market in Europe is Germany. France, Spain and Italy are the next most attractive markets.
