Vodafone poised for 42bn alliance with US operator

Article Abstract:

It seems likely that there is to be a merger or a joint venture between mobile phone operators Vodafone and Airtouch . The news is purely speculative at present but 30 of the UK's leading City analysts left for a tour of Vodafone's European operations on September 06 1998. By joining forces the two companies would improve their European coverage dramatically; Vodafone has operations in Germany, Sweden and the Netherlands, while Airtouch is present in Spain, Italy and Portugal. A merger is one of the plans being considered by Vodafone in an attempt to transform the UK company into a global force. An alternative is not quite a merger, but it will combine the overseas operations of both companies into one company leaving Vodafone, the bigger of the two, in full control of the UK operations and Airtouch in charge of the US domestic business. Another option would be a joint bid from Vodafone and WorldCom for Airtouch. WorldCom would takeover US domestic operations leaving Vodafone in charge of European operations. If a deal does occur it could cost somewhere in the region of GB 42mn. Vodafone currently has a market capitalisation of GB 23mn against Airtouch's GB 19mn.

How to wake up to winter

Article Abstract:

Many people find it hard to adapt to winter, both physically and psychologically. There are a number of ways in which this problem can be addressed. Inhaling pure oxygen improves energy and concentration levels, while crystal therapists claim that certain stones can boost energy. It is worth considering using a lightbox to address the symptoms of Seasonal Affective Disorder, in which lack of daylight disturbs the body clock. Other possible solutions include self hypnosis and getting outside during daylight, possibly at lunchtime.
