Wanted: an Internet without speed limits

Article Abstract:

A number of technologies that have the potential to speed up Internet access are currently being tested in the UK and the US. Attention is mainly focusing on integrated services digital network (ISDN), which gives access speed of 128K per second but is very expensive, cable connections, which can handle data transfer rates of 27 to 34 megabits per second, and asymmetric digital subscriber line (ADSL). BT has been undertaking trials with ADSL since 1994, and reports that it can sustain download speeds of 2Mbps at up to 4 km from the exchange.

Microsoft has agreed to pay an undisclosed sum to Apple Computer relating to a patent dispute, and will invest $150 million in Apple. This news led to a rise in Apple's stock price. Meanwhile Apple has failed to solve a licensing dispute with companies making MAc clones. The failure to tackle this problem could be serious, but the company has made progress in securing backing from Microsoft and other major companies, and should be able to return to profit.
