Wasteland village saved by its women

Article Abstract:

The remote village of Hatgal, Mongolia, has suffered significant economic and social decline during the 1990s. It was once a key trading centre for goods entering and leaving the Soviet Union, but suffered a sharp reverse in its fortunes when Mongolia abandoned Communism and the Soviet Union dropped subsidies to Mongolia. Hatgal now has serious problems with alcoholism and unemployment. However, local women are showing strong determination to revive the economy. They are particularly keen to encourage tourism, even though the tourist season is very short.

Low sex drive and nearly extinct. Can cloning save the panda from itself?

Article Abstract:

Scientists at the Chinese Academy of Science's laboratory of fertilisation biology in Peking, China, are planning to clone the giant panda. This species has very low fertility levels, and there are only 1,000 left in the world. This work will involve planting the nucleus of a panda cell into an egg from another species. The female of the second species would then be implanted with the embryo. China is accelerating efforts to restore the panda's natural habitat, but scientists are placing more emphasis on high-tech methods of boosting panda numbers.

Ugly, polluted, corrupt. Amazing

Article Abstract:

Peking, China, is an unattractive city with high levels of pollution. However, it is fascinating because it is full of contradictions. It has been modernised in some parts, but still contains many traditional courtyard homes which lack even basic facilities. It is worth seeking out places which are off the main tourist routes, but key attractions, such as the Great Wall, are also interesting.
