We can make peaceful bombs, too

Article Abstract:

The Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (START) signed in 1991 in Moscow and Washington means the destruction of thousands of nuclear warheads, and the disposal of plutonium and enriched uranium presents severe problems. They are very toxic and remain highly radioactive for thousands of years. One suggestion is to put it in a spacecraft and send it into the sun but this would be dangerous if the mission failed and the material fell from the sky. It could be sealed by burying it with a nuclear device and then exploding it, melting the rock around it which would then solidify. This also has its dangers. The probable solution will be storage.

Tunes of war as throat-singers go for the jugular

Article Abstract:

Throat-singing is a musical form which was originally practised by herdsmen, chanting shamans and Buddhist monks, but has now become popularised. It has recognised as having great potential as a lucrative business, and there is now growing competition between the leading throat-singers. It is particularly popular in California, and also has a growing number of fans in the UK. Established performers are now having to face competition from new, more commercial groups.
