We may not have a nation but at least we have a TV station

Article Abstract:

Television station MedTV, which broadcasts from Denderleeuw, Belgium, has played a significant role in uniting Kurds throughout the Middle East, Europe and North Africa. Until MedTV began broadcasting in 1995, there was no reliable way of exchanging news between geographically separate Kurdish communities. However, the UK Independent Television Commission (ITC) has now decided to suspend MedTV's broadcasting licence for 21 days for incitement to violence and breaches of impartiality. Turkey is placing the UK government and the ITC under strong pressure to close down MedTV, which has its administrative base in London, England.

We need to be told the full story about events in the Sudan

Article Abstract:

It is possible to argue that the news media is increasingly trying to define how the international community should react to crises such as the famine in Sudan. There is no longer news and documentary coverage showing the background to situations of this kind, and ordinary people must rely on short news reports for information. There is a danger that the situation in Sudan will become simplified, with people not being able to understand its full complexity. It is important to be aware that the way in which stories of crises in Africa are covered by the media has a direct effect on perceptions of Africa.

Will this girls' night in make the boys switch off?

Article Abstract:

The US television programme 'Ally McBeal,' which is a combination of a situation comedy and a drama, has proved extremely popular. It was initially aimed at young women aged 18 to 34, but also proved to be appealing to men too. Ian Lewis, broadcast director at Zenith Media, believes that the programme will also prove popular in the UK when it is broadcast shortly on Channel 4. He points out that there are few similar series in the UK, as broadcasters do not commission programmes for a niche audience.
