We were misled, say parents of babies who died in experiment

Article Abstract:

The UK government has ordered an inquiry into how research into a new type of ventilator to assist the breathing of premature babies was undertaken at the North Staffordshire National Health Service Trust. It has emerged that 43 of 122 babies involved in the research in the period 1989 to 1993 died or were brain-damaged. The parents of these babies claim that they were misled into signing research consent forms. The British Medical Association has emphasized the great importance of gaining informed consent.

Outbreak of meningitis is the worst for half a century

Article Abstract:

There have been 11 confirmed cases of meningitis in the town of Pontypridd, Wales. This has prompted a mass inoculation programme, bringing considerable relief to local people. This is a close-knit community, and it has therefore been relatively easy to ensure that all those at risk are inoculated. There were 440 notifications of meningitis in the UK as a whole in the first three weeks of 1999, and there have been at least 35 deaths.

MMR vaccines: are three jabs really better than one?

Article Abstract:

The view that having the measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccines separately, rather than as one triple vaccine, is safer for children is misguided. Research has failed to establish a link between MMR and bowel disease or autism.
