What crisis?

Article Abstract:

There is a serious lack of awareness among senior managers in UK companies about the year 2000 computer problem, according to research undertaken in Mar 1997 by PA Consulting. Some companies may have acted early enough the ensure that their critical systems will continue to operate into the 21st century, but this means that they have neglected other functions. Many companies will find that their competitiveness is negatively affected because they have failed to take appropriate action, and some may even be unable to operate at all.

The key to privacy

Article Abstract:

There are very mixed views in the UK about plans by the government to monitor electronic communications. It is widely accepted that some information needs to be encrypted, but the government is concerned that encryption can also be used for illegal purposes. For this reason, it wants to be able to de-encrypt communications if necessary. It also believes that users of encryption should deposit copies of their encryption keys with trusted third parties. Some observers believe that this approach would infringe personal privacy.

Small wonder

Article Abstract:

Microprocessors play a key role in modern life, being present in a wide range of domestic and industrial equipment. Their capacity is constantly increasing, and there still seems to be no limit to how much further their capacity can be expanded. The latest generation now contains more than 5 million transistors and can undertake millions of operations per second. It is widely agreed that the microprocessor will continue to have a significant impact on modern life.
