What is the point of having businessmen in a government?

Article Abstract:

Almost every crisis that the UK government has faced has been linked in some way to the ministers it has recruited from the business world. Having business leaders in the most important government departments has proved unsuccessful because the UK's existing political system places more emphasis on integrity than on talent. New rules of ministerial conduct create significant difficulties for any minister, especially one who has been involved in the business world. In particular, any minister who has been involved in business will find it hard to adhere to regulations regarding conflict of interest.

Paddy Ashdown's successor cannot take Blair for granted

Article Abstract:

Those seeking to replace Paddy Ashdown as leader of the UK Liberal Democrats have now begun campaigning officially, although an unofficial campaign has been underway since Jan 1999, when Ashdown announced that he planned to resign. The key issues in this campaign will be whether any new leader can continue Ashdown's success and the relationship of the Liberal Democrats with the Labour government. The Liberal Democrats must focus on choosing the leader who will make them the strongest electoral force.
