What the markets will do in 1999

Article Abstract:

World stock markets are unlikely to see a significant decline in 1999, even though serious economic difficulties could emerge, especially in Latin America. Markets have become accustomed to shocks, and to a certain extent have already discounted them. Western bond markets remain strong, and in the immediate future money will continue to become cheaper. This will make equities appear inexpensive in relative terms. There are no indications of the sort of significant change in investor psychology that may prompt western equity markets to enter a period of decline.

Another turbulent year for shares

Article Abstract:

The equity market is set to benefit from modest valuations and strong liquidity flows in 1999, even though it will come under pressure from frequent and large earnings downgrades in the early part of the year. An easier policy environment will bring positive developments, and the equity market is likely to advance to around 6,200 on the FTSE 100 by the end of 1999. It is important to be aware that the market will probably fluctuate substantially.
