When deportation means death

Article Abstract:

An investigation is being conducted into the death of Jamaican Joy Gardner, 40, on Aug 01, 1993, after a raid by five Metropolitan Police officers serving her with a deportation order. The police were instructed by the Home Office to 'detain and remove' her on Jul 28, before letters about deportation were opened by her lawyers. Six officers to detain one woman and her child seems excessive. In 1992 the Home Office made 881 deportation orders. It is only necessary to 'detain and remove' in extreme cases where the applicant is likely to abscond or is a criminal.

Better off without a bankroll

Article Abstract:

John Smith, the Labour Party leader, proposed a one member, one vote system for the selection of candidates and party leaders. Trade unions were furious about this as they felt it reduced their power. Trade unions pay affiliation fees to the Labour Party which in 1991 amounted to 4.3 million pounds sterling. Union members vote about the maintenance of a political fund with no say in where the money goes or how it is spent. It buys large blocks of votes at Labour conferences and the rest is used for the promotion of nominated MPs.
