Where ignorance is blitz

Article Abstract:

An encounter with a computer-illiterate customs official in the United Kingdom illustrates dangers to civil liberties from staff seeking to investigate the contents of a computer. It has become difficult to have a reasonable discussion on the content of the internet, and refusing to allow a computer to be inspected may imply that someone aims to hide evidence. Previously 'Ulysses', a work by James Joyce, was banned by someone who had not read the novel, and similar censorship policies may occur in relation tot he internet in the United Kingdom.

Internet's global reach is not all utopian

Article Abstract:

The internet is a US phenomenon and only a small proportion of the population of the US is involved. Exclusion and a widening gap between those involved in this technology and those who are not have become problems, despite talk of the internet as a tool to promote democracy. There could also be economic problems if many people in the US are not able to develop the skills needed to deal with new technology, though there have been moves to subsidize Web usage costs for libraries and schools.

With the rise of electronic commerce comes the growth of the digital security market

Article Abstract:

Internet security technologies have become increasingly important with the development of electronic commerce. Security concerns are a major issue for electronic commerce and could hamper its development. The world intranet and Internet security market could be worth $2.3 billion in 2001 compared with $225 million in 1996, according to Datamonitor. Government intervention in encryptation could hamper commerce, and the US government has decided against intervention on these grounds.
