Where the accent is on upward mobility

Article Abstract:

Edwina Pickett, teacher of elocution in London, believes that speech is as much a social barrier as ever it was and the demand for elocution lessons is rising. It is especialy important in people's careers, and wives of successful businessmen are concerned that their speech does not reflect badly on their spouses. There is also a demand for etiquette lessons such as who is introduced to who and what knives are used to eat certain things, all important at social and business functions. National Theatre accent coach Joan Washington says that she can tell what part of London a person comes from by their accent.
