Who are Hamas?

Article Abstract:

The militant Islamic organisation Hamas aims to establish an Islamic state on the Iranian model. It sees the Israeli-Palestinian peace process as giving in to Zionism. It is supported by around 15-20% of the population of Gaza and the West Bank, and the candidates it backed in the Palestinian elections in Jan 1996 were generally successful. It is uncertain where the organisation receives assistance from, but it is clear that Syria allows its leaders to operate there.

Brum marches to a happier tune

Article Abstract:

The city of Birmingham, England, has until recently had a negative image, being associated with ugly urban landscapes. However, it has now started to become much more European in character, and is much more outward-looking than in the past. It has received a great deal of European Union funding, but most of its residents remain indifferent towards the European Union. On a municipal level, there is a very serious approach towards making Birmingham a European city.
