Why Andrew Lees went to Madagascar

Article Abstract:

Plans by mining companies QIT and Rio Tinto Zinc (RTZ) to extract titanium dioxide in three areas of rainforest near Tolanaro, in southern Madagascar, will have a significant impact on the region and its inhabitants. The scheme was being investigated by Friends of the Earth campaign director Andrew Lees when he died recently on a trip to Madagascar. He worked tirelessly on the trip, determined to record all aspects of the rainforest's flora and fauna, and his material will prove valuable in assessing the environmental impact of the mining scheme.

The boys who froze to death at 40,000 feet

Article Abstract:

Two boys from Guinea, Fode Tounkara aged 14-years-old, and Yaguine Koita, 15-years-old, stowed away on a Sabena flight in the undercarriage of the aircraft and froze to death. Both boys were good students. They left a letter which addressed European leaders, asking them to consider the suffering of young people and children in Africa. They mention war, food, illness and lack of education for the poor as problems, and ask for help in ending poverty and war. Their letter has led them to be seen as martyrs.
