Why I trust Jack Straw to do the right thing

Article Abstract:

Liberal observers believe that shadow home secretary Jack Straw would ignore civil rights and manipulate ordinary people's concerns about law and order if the UK Labour party became the party of government. They claim that his views are actually very close to those of the current home secretary, Michael Howard, and criticise his support of the Police Bill, which some regard as restricting civil liberties. However, others feel that he should not be judged in advance and that he will do the right things if he becomes home secretary.

The committee awakes - to loud debate, we hope

Article Abstract:

Chris Mullin has been appointed chairman of the United Kingdom Commons Home Affairs Select Committee. Mullin is able to criticise the government for its mistakes, and he is not an obedient party man. He was elected as Labor member of parliament for Sunderland in 1987. He has opposed the promise of the chancellor, Gordon Brown, not to increase taxes and argues that the well-off should help pay for the damage caused by the previous government's policies. There is a need for him to take his new role seriously.

Tony, Gordon and no Joy

Article Abstract:

The departure of Joy Johnson from her post as the Labour party's campaigns director, which gave her responsibility for media strategy, has caused considerable surprise. Observers believe that she became embroiled in a conflict of personalities, having openly supported Gordon Brown's attempts to gain the party leadership. It is believed that she deliberately attempted to promote Brown, balancing out the large amount of publicity being given to Tony Blair.
