Why Saddam and Milosevic are immune to sanctions

Article Abstract:

There are a number of reasons why the downfall of Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein predicted by the West since the early 1990s has not taken place. The imposition of sanctions on Iraq has actually strengthened Saddam's position, as he has used it as an excuse to control the distribution system. Many people have returned to the countryside to grow crops, thus reducing the possibility of opposition movements gathering strength. Economic sanctions have also boosted fundamentalism, with many people taking refuge in religion.

The financial virus can only be kept off-shore for so long

Article Abstract:

It is inevitable that financial instability leads to recession. Lenders become cautious, and credit is restricted, thus producing a decline in economic activity. It must now be considered whether the next recession will be like previous recessions since 1945, with unemployment rising substantially while inflation is restricted but not abolished. The alternative scenario would be a repeat of what happened before the second world war, with rising unemployment being accompanied by declining consumer prices.

A chance for the C of E to throw off its chains

Article Abstract:

The Church of England would be in a difficult position if Prince Charles were to seek to remarry. This is not seen as acceptable by the Church, yet his divorce is accepted. Prince Charles is the Church of England's Supreme Governor. Ending links between the Church and state could bring benefits for the Church, which has lost ground. The Church would then be independent of parliament and could become less conservative and lose inhibitions about how the public is addressed.
