Why a republic makes even more sense for Australia than it would in Britain

Article Abstract:

It is easier to argue in favour of republicanism in Australia than it ever would be in the UK. However, this does not mean that the republican cause will necessarily triumph on Nov 6, 1999, when Australians will vote on whether to implement a President appointed by the Federal parliament. The main problem facing republicans is that they have failed to show that benefits will result from implementing a republic. Furthermore, many Australians are likely to vote against the current proposal because they wish to have a directly elected President.

Many hands have been tilting the balance of justice

Article Abstract:

Pressure on the police to deal quickly with high-profile cases such as murder is not the only reason why miscarriages of justice take place in the UK. Prosecutors are under pressure to obtain a conviction, so tend to conceal from the defence team items of evidence which may undermine their case. Similarly, judges also have some responsibility for miscarriages of justice, sometimes presiding over proceedings which are not being carried out in the correct way.

Now even graduates are sleeping rough

Article Abstract:

Young homeless people have traditionally been seen as outcasts from society who come from a disrupted family background. However, recent research indicates that one in 10 young people living in hostels in London, England, is a graduate. This shows that youth homelessness is now affecting all levels of society. It remains largely a hidden problem, as the homeless come into many categories, and are not just those who are sleeping rough on the streets.
