Why my son went to live in a cave

Article Abstract:

Ralph Woodall, 63, has a 30-year old son Tom who was a happy young boy but suddenly became schizophrenic when around 25. He suddenly began to look dirty and rough, unkempt, distracted and exhausted and a psychiatrist diagnosed schizophrenia. Tom started medication but felt it did not relieve his symptoms, so he stopped it. He gradually deteriorated further, gave up his job and wandered from town to town. He wants to sell his house but Ralph has made arrangements with the Court of Protection to prevent this as it would make him permanently homeless. He has assaulted his father because of this.

Hands-on therapy in the GP's surgery

Article Abstract:

The NHS sanctioned the use of spiritual healing in GP surgeries in Sep 1991, providing the GP is clinically accountable for them. General practitioner (GP) Jean Roberton sometimes practices spiritual healing in preference to orthodox medicine. There are 15 organisations registering 8,500 healers in the UK. There is little scientific proof that healing works but the Confederation of Healing Organisations has sponsored trials. Most alternative therapies talk about centres of energy, for which there is no physiochemical basis.

In memory of Peter, whom we failed

Article Abstract:

Peter Newman's life was spent in and out of institutions, prison, and on the streets, a lifestyle common in schizophrenics who need constant supervision to avoid this cycle. As a paranoid schizophrenic Newman needed an orderly life with constant medication, but he was discharged from most institutions and finally committed suicide. This is a common pattern among schizophrenics who are not properly catered for in the government's community care policy.
