Listen lads - women's work counts, too

Article Abstract:

The UK Labour party has been very critical of the government's record on employment, dismissing claims about large numbers of jobs being created because the majority are only part-time. The party seems to subscribe to the old-fashioned view that only full-time jobs are 'real' work, and assumes that all people working part-time would rather have full-time employment. This is far from being the case. Labour should recognise the value of part-time employment, and also the fact that many people in full-time employment would rather have a part-time job.

The jobless who will never fit in our brave new world

Article Abstract:

Politicians are very keen to address the problem of structural unemployment which is created by unemployed people not having the skills required to carry out the jobs which are being created. However, it is a political myth to claim that all the long-term unemployed can be retrained to fill skilled and high-value jobs. Low-productivity workers are unwilling to take low-paid employment, and a mismatch between labour availability and job vacancies will therefore always exist.
