Tread softly on his dreams

Article Abstract:

Novelist Rupert Thomson regards himself as relaxed, even though he was deeply affected by the death of his mother when he was only eight years old. He still cannot remember anything about her death or about his life before her death. His novels present a situation which is then brought to the brink. They reflect his interest in non-conscious information processing and in how people act on things they have taken in subconsciously. He regards his novels as meditations on vulnerability and loss, rather than thrillers.

Urban cowboys

Article Abstract:

There are very few books aimed at young black people, according to Courttia Newland. This is why he wrote his first novel, 'The Scholar,' at the age of only 23. He found it very hard to get his novel accepted by a publisher, even though there is a shortage of material by black, male, working-class authors. He has attempted to challenge stereotypes about young black men in his novel, showing that they are not necessarily bad. The novel has some extreme moments, but is very believable.

Living in a material world

Article Abstract:

Novelist Geoff Nicholson does not wish to write naturalism. He is interested in ordinary people in unusual situations, rather than unusual people in ordinary situations. He does not regard himself as a genuine obsessive in the way his characters are, and is aware of the need to acknowledge diversity. He feels that the relationships people have with objects are very important, especially in today's very materialistic society.
