Rosy outlook for gilts dealers

Article Abstract:

Increased government borrowing of 1 billion pounds sterling a week in 1993/4 will be good for the 19 gilts market-making firms which handle government funding. The gilts market can respond to the value of gilts in issue doubling from 1993-1996. Governments need to promote their bond markets more and to market abroad more systematically. International clearing systems would be useful. Dual function market-makers combine broking and jobbing.

Greenspan rocks world stock markets

Article Abstract:

The currently very high levels of US share prices could bring dangers for stock markets, according to Alan Greenspan, chairman of the US Federal Reserve. Stock markets worldwide declined dramatically after he expressed this view, with the value of shares in London, England, falling by more than 35 billion pounds sterling at one point. However, prices have generally covered, and his comment has served merely to cool down US stock markets.

Fed chairman's rates warning shakes markets world-wide

Article Abstract:

There has been a strong reaction on financial markets to the warning by US Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan that the current boom on US financial markets will not last indefinitely. He believes that continuing optimism about the US economy may be misguided. Many observers have interpreted his remarks as an indication that he may soon raise interest rates in order to prevent an uncontrollable financial situation emerging.
