Hushed burial for flower of Russia

Article Abstract:

The assassination of Galina Starovoitova, a member of the Russian parliament, has caused great shock and sadness among large numbers of ordinary Russians. She was a leading figure in Russian democratic politics, and played a significant role in bringing about the end of the one-party Communist system. Her death has had a negative impact on the Democrats, widening the gap between them and the far right. Many people now predict a bleak future for Russian politics.

Spin doctors and surgeons save the comeback kid

Article Abstract:

Russian president Boris Yeltsin now seems to have regained his health, and is returning to work with conditions much more in his favour. The conflict in Chechnya has come to an end, and he has managed to isolate General Alexander Lebed, who was clearly aspiring to become president. It would be unwise to state that Yeltsin's position is entirely secure, but the fact that he has survived at all is much more than most observers had expected.
