A chance to be your own DJ for 28 days

Article Abstract:

The Broadcasting Act of 1991 permits 28-day Restricted Service Licences for radio stations which do not duplicate broadcasting in their area. There were 241 in 1992. The licence fee is 2,000 pounds sterling for an FM frequency. Enthusiastic volunteers who can find a studio and transmitter provide unique services. Fast FM is a Muslim station in Bradford, England. Forge FM is run by Sheffield Student Radio at Sheffield University. Re-applications may not be submitted for four months, when a new frequency is allocated.

Virgin flies the flag on the airwaves

Article Abstract:

Virgin 1215 is one of three national commercial radio stations. It will play adult rock music to appeal to the 24-44-year-olds. This age group is keenly sought by advertisers. Virgin will employ Chris Evans of Channel 4's The Big Breakfast, Richard Skinner as joint programme director from GLR and Tommy Vance from GLR. A possible drawback is that the station is on the medium wave, which is mono. The waveband need not deter listeners; the Irish station Atlantic 252 on long wave attracts 4 million UK listeners.

Mixed messages over the airwaves

Article Abstract:

The Radio Authority re-advertises the local commercial radio franchises in the UK in Oct 1992. There will be 55 new franchises in 1993 and 73 in the next two years, granted to those financially stable which are committed to local needs and improve listener choice. There will be five large regional services on FM by the end of 1994. Existing stations are concerned because they need two frequencies with different services to be profitable.
