Why the Dependent Territories are like a virgin ...

Article Abstract:

The UK government is seeking to re-establish closer links with the Dependent Territories. This will include allowing residents of Dependent Territories to settle in the UK, a right which was removed with the Commonwealth Immigrants Act in 1962. This is a positive move, and will not lead to a large influx of immigrants. However, it is important to be aware that the relationship between the UK and the Dependent Territories can never be completely restored. In particular, residents of Dependent Territories no longer automatically feel deferent towards the UK.

The Empire turns its back again

Article Abstract:

The UK's approach to the return of Hong Kong to Chinese sovereignty has been characterized by hypocrisy. The people of Hong Kong were promised by successive UK governments that they would not be abandoned to a tyrannical regime, but this is in fact what has happened. The UK has decided that it would be pragmatic to cooperate with China, and has lost the opportunity to take decisive action. In contrast, there has been no sign of the UK being willing to cooperate in Montserrat, where a volcanic eruption has made life very difficult for ordinary people.
