Why we fail those who need us most

Article Abstract:

The Warnock Report of 1979 and the 1981 Education Act required 'special' childrens' needs to be met in mainstream schools without affecting the education of the other children. Teachers need special training and support for this. Increasingly, children start school with severely restricted vocabulary and limited social skills. Disadvantaged children could benefit from the structure and routine of school but the modern setting of small groups undertaking different activities within the class is unsuitable for them.

The three most crucial things for a play: relocation, relocation and relocation

Article Abstract:

There were many challenges associated with staging an adapted version of Berthold Brecht's 'The Good Woman of Setzuan' in South Africa. The adaption, undertaken with the assistance of story-teller Gcina Mhlope, took into account the fact that South African audiences would be as poor as the characters portrayed in the play. It was necessary to give the characters new names, and this provided them with new histories. The production was particularly notable for the influence of actress Martha Mdenge.
