65 years in the working very hard classes

Article Abstract:

Phoebe Austen, a 78-year-old widow who lives in Hoath, Kent, has had to work hard all her life. She began working at the age of five, helping make brooms for her father, and continued to work when she married and had children. She is now reasonably comfortable financially, but feels isolated in her tiny council bungalow. She approves of the fact that small local shops are being replaced by large out-of-town supermarkets, but regrets the fact that she is unable to travel to a supermarket whenever she wishes.

The rural heart stops pumping

Article Abstract:

Many of the UK's rural petrol stations have closed down because their owners cannot afford the investment required to comply with new environmental regulations. This means that rural communities are being robbed of an important focal point, as these petrol stations often offer a range of other services, such as selling groceries and newspapers. In some cases, local people are moving away because they find that they have to travel long distances to obtain basic provisions.
