Will Bosnia become Beirut?

Article Abstract:

There are some very disturbing parallels between current developments in Bosnia and events which took place following the arrival of Nato peace-keeping troops in Beirut in 1982. As in 1982, the US believes that local militias will be disarmed, and plans to re-arm the government army. The US was obliged to leave troops in Beirut much longer than planned, leaving them very open to attack, as happened in 1983 when 241 servicemen were killed in a suicide bomb attack. It is possible that the US will also have to extend its presence in Bosnia.

Rostropovich flies into Beirut bringing spirit of Lebanon the beautiful

Article Abstract:

Mstislav Rostropovich is the greatest cellist in the world and his performance at the Baalbek music festival, Lebanon, reflects characteristics of that country. Lebanon has been hit by war yet there is a view in Lebanon that Rostropovich also upholds that war can be fogotten and religious co-existence is possible. There is a passion for music, art and pleasure in Lebanon, alongside war. The music festival was started in 1922, shortly after Lebanon was created as a nation.
