Will he stick his neck out for peace?

Article Abstract:

Ulster Unionist leader David Trimble faces very great challenges as he decides whether to compromise with Northern Ireland's nationalists or align the party with the hard-line loyalists, led by Rev Ian Paisley. He is aware that Paisley still has the power to inflict great damage on Unionists who appear too willing to compromise, but is also aware that he will be portrayed negatively if he appears to be rejecting the opportunity to bring about a peace settlement. This is likely to be the most important decision of his entire political career.

Marches trample peace hopes

Article Abstract:

Relations between the UK government and Irish nationalists have become extremely strained following the decision by the security forces to move the Drumcree Orange march into a Catholic area of Portadown, Northern Ireland. Sinn Fein has called on nationalists to protest in the streets, and this will create a difficult situation in advance of the Jul 12, 1997, parades. The IRA may now decide to postpone any decision to renounce violence.
