Will students live locally and study sports science?

Article Abstract:

The number of 18-21-year-olds applying to UK universities has risen slightly, despite the introduction of a 1,000 pounds sterling a year tuition fee and the phasing out of grants. However, there has been a decline in applications from those aged over 21. The introduction of new charges for university education does not seem to be having a negative impact on students from the poorest socio-economic groups. However, some observers feel that, while applications have not declined, the number of students actually registering at universities could fall.

Lecturers set to suspend their pay protest

Article Abstract:

The Association of University Teachers is likely to agree with the Universities and Colleges Employers' Association to form working groups on pay discrimination and casualization. Talks will also be held on new wage-bargaining procedures. This development will probably mean that industrial action threatened by university lecturers is suspended in Oct 1999. Some observers feel that academics will not be treated fairly until the structure of higher education is changed.
