William Burroughs

Article Abstract:

William Burroughs was an author who was associated with the Beat poets, Neil Cassidy, Jack Kerouac, Harold Norse and Allen Ginsberg. They opposed the work ethic and emphasis on acquisition and based their lifestyles on fast-food, drugs, alcohol and sex. Burroughs was born in 1914 and married in 1945. He shot is wife in an accident when playing with firearms. He wrote about his drig experiences, and 'The Naked Lunch', a masterpiece, was written after he was cured of addiction. He used a cut-up writing method for this book, and more conventional methods in later works. He work aroused both hostility and was praised, the extreme reactions being partly related to its content.

Edwige Feuillere

Article Abstract:

Actress Edwige Feuillere went to Paris, France, in 1928 to study at the Conservatoire. She met many new authors, and developed an interest in modern plays. She began to play small parts in films, and in 1932 gained the main role in Marcel Pagnol's play 'Topaze.' She completed her studies in 1931, and subsequently appeared in a series of light comedies at the Palais Royale. She performed at the Comedie and other theatres during the 1930s, and was in demand from playwrights to act in their new works. Her most famous role was as Marguerite Gautier in 'La Dame aux Camelias.'

Wolf Mankowitz

Article Abstract:

Writer Wolf Mankowitz studied English at Downing College, Cambridge, England. He served as a volunteer coal miner and in the Army during the second world war, and first became known as a writer in the early 1950s. He gained a particular reputation for his ability to make a complex and specialized subject accessible to ordinary people. He wrote fiction and drama, as well as books about Charles Dickens and some historical subjects.
