Can they rebuild the Orient?

Article Abstract:

East Asia is beginning to show signs of economic revival. However, it is important to be aware that economic developments are not uniform across the region. There are three distinct economic areas within East Asia: Japan, China and the rest of the region. Japan's economy is still declining, but at a slower rate than previously. Economic growth in China began to falter in 1998, but government efforts to maintain the impetus of economic expansion are being partly successful. In the rest of the region, economic performance has been mixed. It is clear that East Asia will have to work harder in the future to achieve economic growth.

The worst is past but the Sun is still to rise on the East Asian economies

Article Abstract:

Mixed views are being expressed about whether economic recovery is really beginning to take place in East Asia. Most observers in Hong Kong believe that recovery is underway, but there are uncertainties about the prospects for the Chinese economy, especially in relation to devaluation. Similarly, Japan's economic prospects remain uncertain, as current economic growth is being fuelled by an unsustainable level of public spending.
