Women take up arms in Eritrea's war

Article Abstract:

There are now around 40,000 Eritrean women fighting for their country against Ethiopia, from which Eritrea gained independence in 1993. This war, which began in May 1998, has become the largest in the world, with at least 50,000 soldiers having been killed. The women soldiers feel that it is their duty to protect their country against Ethiopia, which is seeking to expand towards the sea. Ethiopia appears to feel threatened by Eritrea, which is small but has been able to establish a strong economy.

Power slips from Kabila in Congo

Article Abstract:

Congolese President Laurent-Desire Kabila may be ousted unless he is willing to give away large areas of the country to rebels supported by Uganda and Rwanda. Kabila has received support from Angola, Namibia and Zimbabwe, but all three of these countries now wish to withdraw from their commitments to Kabila and make peace. The rebel groups now feel that there is a good chance of pushing through their demands.
