Yeltsin snubs Gore amid new health fears

Article Abstract:

The Russian President, Boris Yeltsin, postponed a meeting with Al Gore, US Vice-president, on July 15 1996, saying that he was taking a holiday and giving cause for concern for his health. He caused mystification by then appearing to working and announcing changes in his administration. Yeltsin's aides took the Gore matter lightly, and it was feared that he might have wanted to show his annoyance with the US for some reason. The main causes of the postponement are, however, expected to be a whim or his health.

Rich mix of troubles feeds Turkish unrest

Article Abstract:

Recent street violence in Turkey has caused more than 20 deaths, and the country is experiencing its worst unrest since civilian rule was reinstated in 1983. The demonstrations have centred on the country's Shia Alawite minority, which took to the streets after an Alawite part of Istanbul was attacked by gunmen. The opposition Motherland Party is now calling for urgent measures to improve the economy, seeing this as the only way to reduce social unrest.

Central bankers forge ahead on a European currency

Article Abstract:

The European currency unit (ecu) will probably be in circulation in at least five countries by 2000, and financial experts from all 15 European Union countries are looking at a system for moving towards a single currency. This is most unlikely to include the UK, although there is a British representative at the negotiations. Full monetary union will not definitely take place, but it is now a distinct possibility.
