Yorkshire Water to buils 28m wood-fuelled power plant

Article Abstract:

UK based water supply company, Yorkshire Water, has announced that the construction of its wood-fuelled power plant at Eggborough, UK is to begin in mid June 1998. THE plant it said to be the first of its kind in Europe and is to be a join venture between Yorkshire Water (85%), TPS Termiska Processor of Sweden (10%) and Royal Schelde Group of the Netherlands (5%). The join venture is known as ARBRE. The power plant it said to cost some GB 28mn to construct and will produce electricity from wood chips. It is hoped that the plant will be capable of producing some 10 megawatts of electricity when it starts production at the end of 1999.

London tube privatisation in jeopardy, says business lobby

Article Abstract:

The election of a mayor of London, who will include political responsibility for the London Underground rail network among his or her duties, is causing uncertainty among contractors bidding for public-private partnerships to modernise the network. Private investors may lose interest in the network if the new mayor is ambivalent regarding privatisation, warn business leaders. Over 100 companies, including Railtrack, Balfour Beatty, Alstom and Brown & Root have declared an interest in private-public partnerships.

Church steps out with 11% profit rise

The shoemaker and shoe retailing company Church & Co., has announced a rise in pre-tax profits for the half year period to June 30 1998. As a result of a good sales performance through July and August 1998 too the company is predicting that its future too is bright. The company is planning to open new stores in Oxford and Manchester in the near future.
