You'll never make a lady of Lola

Article Abstract:

It is common for children to rebel against their parents' attitudes. Somebody who was brought up in a very ordered, repressive environment may well be extremely liberal as an adult, wanting to experience the freedom they never had as a child. Similarly, someone whose parents were very unconventional, encouraging them into new experiences such as taking drugs, may react by leading a very ordered, conventional life as an adult. Madonna Ciccone's daughter Lourdes will have to conform as she attends Cheltenham Ladies' College, unlike her mother.

Suzie Hayman had been an only child for 40 years when she got the phone call: 'Hello, it's your sister Carol.'

Article Abstract:

A woman's experiences of establishing contact with her sister, her father's daughter from a previous marriage, are described. The mixed emotions associated with becoming accustomed to having a sibling after believing herself to be an only child for the whole of her life are discussed. Both women are very pleased and intrigued to have a sister, although they are aware that the situation needs to be handled carefully and their relationship must be allowed to develop gradually.

The silent years

Article Abstract:

Communication between parents and teenagers is often difficult, and the skills involved, such as being able to listen, have to be learnt. There are often problems in breaking free of patterns set by one's own parents, when seeking to parent an adolescent. Teenagers may need to stop communicating in order to learn how to run their own lives. Parents have to respect their children if they are to be respected in turn. Parenting becomes easier once communication improves.
