You've nothing to gain but your chains

Article Abstract:

The recent revelation that female prisoners have been chained during pregnancy, and some even while they are actually giving birth, has attracted considerable controversy. To some observers, this is merely one more indication of the way in which the UK government is mismanaging the criminal justice system. Many people who have committed serious crimes are never brought to justice, while prisons are overcrowded with people who have committed only minor offences. Sending petty criminals to prison brings no advantage to society, and only serves to educate them in more serious crime.

Triumph of hope over laws of probability

Article Abstract:

It is likely that people who do not participate in the lottery will soon become a very small minority in the UK. They are either people who object to gambling on religious grounds or those who accept that their chances of ever winning a large sum of money are so small that it is not worth participating. Some forms of gambling have a rational element, but investing large amounts of money in lottery tickets certainly is not rational.

Riddled with corruption? I don't buy it

Article Abstract:

The Labour party is keen to promote an image of the Conservative party as being split apart by scandals over corruption. In fact, Labour has just as poor a record on corruption as the Conservatives, and in neither case is corruption really a serious problem. MPs do not have enough power to make them worth corrupting, and British political life is extremely law-abiding compared with many other countries.
