1995 may be high-ozone year in U.S., early data indicate

Article Abstract:

Preliminary data gathered at various state monitoring stations through late July and August forecast a high ozone air pollution for several urban areas in 1995. High ozone levels are predicted for Texas, Chicago, IL, Kansas City, MO, San Francisco, CA, Detroit, MI, Miami, FL, Memphis, TN, Pittsburgh, PA, Birmingham, AL, and Salt Lake City, UT, which have exceeded air quality standards either once or several times in previous years. EPA and state officials attribute the rise in ozone levels to the summer heat, which enhances the reaction between hydrocarbons and nitrogen oxides, thereby stimulating the production of ozone.

EPA, DOE move to pilot-scale tests of contaminated N.Y./N.J. sediments

Article Abstract:

The Dept. of Energy, the EPA and a consortium of universities will select finalists among seven technology developers for a pilot project on cleanup technology for contaminated dredged sediments in Mar. 1996. The chosen vendors will have to prove that they can perform cleanup for less than $100 per ton. The program is intended to provide technologies which can decontaminate sediments that have to be dredged to ensure continued operation of the New York/New Jersey Harbor.

Contractors selected for NY/NJ sediment cleanup pilot

Article Abstract:

The Port of Authority of New York and New Jersey announced that it has chosen a total of seven contractors to conduct bench-scale tests for decontaminating dredged sediments from the facility. Port officials state that the company with the most effective technology will be awarded the contract for the full-scale decontamination effort, which is scheduled to begin by early 1997.
