Streetcar carries evolution modelers around roadblocks

Article Abstract:

Peter Hammerstein has developed a form of game theory to model genetic evolution, which unlike traditional models, links a single trait to several genes. In his 'streetcar' model, an evolving population makes temporary stops to take on an influential mutation, then continues evolving.

Scientists still waiting for promised reforms

Article Abstract:

Scientists in Ireland have not received a promised policy statement from the government on their recommendations for increased funding and other science reforms. Ireland spends only $3.5 million on basic research annually, which is 1.2% of its gross domestic product.

Britain's House of Lords' Select Committee on Science and Technology released a report that indicates that the effort to build an element of competition into the National Health Service (NHS) may limit the ability of NHS hospitals to conduct basic research.
