A gas of steel balls; marbles are more difficult to understand than atoms or molecules

Article Abstract:

There has been a lack of comprehensive theories in the study of granular gases, although such gases range from soil movement in earthquakes to the Rings of Saturn. One granular gases study, involving steel ball 'gas,' is described.

Ultimate stop motion

Article Abstract:

Scientists have used specially prepared gas to bring light to a complete halt. While the Rowland Institute for Science's research group uses frozen sodium atoms and Harvard University's team uses a four-centimeter-long cell of hot rubidium vapor, both freeze the light using a two-step process.
