A matter of taste

Article Abstract:

Research indicates that food and taste preferences can be genetically determined. Some people inherit the dominant form of a gene which determines sensitivity to bitterness and other tastes. Others inherit the recessive form of the gene and are relatively insensitive to sweetness and bitterness.

Age of the universe

Article Abstract:

Ancient Chinese astronomers recorded five supernovae which they termed as 'guest stars' between 185 and 1604 AD. Using historical and modern scientific data, one astrophysicist concluded that the 'guest star' recorded in 185 was not a supernova, but rather, the Swift-Tuttle comet.

Fragile future

Article Abstract:

American eighth graders perform poorly in science and mathematics. This is a grim scenario at the eve of the 21st century. There is a need for curricular reforms, teacher training and parental involvement in education to address this problem.
