A new way of working

Article Abstract:

The management of Rover Cars, a subsidiary of British Aerospace, has devised new working practices to improve management-employee relations and increase productivity with emphasis on training a multi-skilled work force. The aim is to help the workers build their career within the company. Inspired by Japanese management techniques, Rover Cars has adopted an approach which confers a single status on all workers by removing the check-in system, abolishing management canteens and retrenchment of workers and paying salaries directly into the bank account of workers. The new working methods have aided the improvement of the company's productivity and profitability.

Grasping without guesswork

Article Abstract:

The use of robots for various types of work in industries and commercial organizations is facilitated by the use of robot self-simulation cells and programs. The programs when implemented in a robot will enable the robot function in the required procedure. The use of computer simulations helps perceive the functioning of the robot, and enables a change in its program or design. The collision between objects handled by robots can also be avoided.

The robot renaissance

Article Abstract:

Mike Wilson is the new chairman of the British Robot Assn. He hopes to restore interest in robots outside the automotive industry; the original burst of interest and the government funding that accompanied it petered out when companies found robots were limited. They are most used in the auto industry, especially for spot welding, and are popular in plastics processing. The next growth area may be palletizing and lifting loads.
