What the doctor ordered

Article Abstract:

Doctors increasingly use composite materials for prosthetics and surgical implants. Since 1985 Blatchford, a firm in Basingstoke, England, has led the way in using carbon fiber composites medically. Its designs and manufacturing methods have improved greatly since 1985, and revisions continue. CRP of Salt Lake City, Utah, enjoys great success with a hybrid foot made of dissimilar materials. Other composites aid cartilage regrowth and replace metal pins, plates, and screws.

Software boost to SCADA

Article Abstract:

Software and computer advances are making supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) energy management systems more powerful while shortening a given system's useful life. Integration with related control systems is largely complete, placing more power in the hands of technicians and others not expert with computers. Packages from Tenet Systems and Science Systems are entering use across Europe.
