A second coreceptor for HIV in early stages of infection

Article Abstract:

Three separate research teams have announced in late June 1996 that they have identified CC-CKR-5 as a CD4 coreceptor for HIV strains. CC-CKR-5 is most actively in use during early infection stages. In later stages the virus apparently uses fusin as a coreceptor for entry into immune-system cells.

Returning emigres add new luster to AIDS research

Article Abstract:

The San Raffaele Scientific Institute's Dept of Biological and Technological research (DIBIT), opened in 1992 in Milan, Italy, is luring prominent expatriate AIDS researchers back home. Paolo Lusso, Guido Poli and Mauro Malnati are among the returnees who had been working at NIH in the US.

AIDS researchers negotiate tricky slopes of science

Article Abstract:

Researchers have identified over a dozen coreceptors that may help to explain how HIV-infected patients eventually develop AIDS. But researchers disagree over whether coreceptors other than CXCR4 and CCR5 have significant roles.
