A state's use of electronic medical record: a means to address Arkansas' health care responsibilities to her children - promoting access to cost-effective care

Article Abstract:

Evaluation of the Arkansas Verification of Eligibility and Claims Submission System reveals that the system has been effective in reducing transaction costs and provider payment denials. The system was set up by the state's Medicaid office and a for-profit data-system corporation with aims of establishing a seamless, quasi-public system through a state-wide, paediatric/adolescent managed care system. Administrative costs are now 10 cents per transaction and provider payment denials have been reduced to 10% from between 25% and 30%.

Fran-spotting

Article Abstract:

The use of Global Positioning Satellite (GPS) technology enabled the Federal Emergency Management Agency to provide timely assistance to residents of North Carolina which was visited by Hurricane Fran. FEMA was also able to study wind and water damage claims before evidences were erased. Teams were dispatched to collect information indicating storm surge peak levels and the extent of flooding of coastal islands and inland bays. GPS technology enabled them to complete the task in time.
