Aged microstructure and micro-mechanical modeling

Article Abstract:

Transmission electron microscopy was employed to analyze the precipitate structure in Ni rich NiTi exposed to various aging treatments that include peak-aged and over-aged cases as well as to assess the drop in the average Ni concentration of the matrix after over-aging. Further, the local stress fields and morphological changes related with the precipitation of Ti3Ni4 in Ni rich NiTi alloys were investigated. To predict the local resolved sheer stress fields on the 24 martensite correspondence variant pairs near the semi-coherent precipitates in peak-aged NiTi, micro-mechanical modeling was used. The results are discussed.

Discussion of experimental results

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted to analyze the critical transformation stress levels under tension and martensite start temperatures for single crystal, (100), (110) and (111) orientations, and polycrystalline NiTi subjected to various aging treatments. To predict the effect of precipitation on the critical stresses and temperatures necessary to cause martensite transformations in peak-aged and over-aged NiTi, micro-mechanical modeling was employed. The results are discussed.

Thermal-induced transformation of retained austenite in the simulated case of a carburized steel

Article Abstract:

The thermally-induced transformation of retained austenite in carburized steels is studied. Experiments are conducted wherein heat-treated smooth fatigue specimens are subjected to axial and diametral strains using a uniaxial 89-kN ATS Long Term Fatigue Machine connected to a SoMat Model 1100 Test Control and Data Acquisition System. Results indicate that the transformation rate is linear with time and highly dependent on the hydrostaticstress.
